THE ASSAILANT : story by Ikeagwu Ebuka

The Assailant

I made a beeline to my room,my chest heaving with fear as my body reverberated in harmony. My eyes were slow to adjust to the darkness of my room as I groped towards my bed.It was the first hiding place that strucked my muddled mind.

Beneath my bed,I could hear the echo of my heart,the tune solemn in anticipation of the end.My. breath slowed as I waited anxiously for my assailant.
 
The swirling sound of my door announced his presence. His enormous silhouette  tainted my room with an eerie aura as everything lost activity.I held my breath for a second as I watched his silhouette approach my bed like one with clairvoyant abilities.

The thought of being mutilated with the axe he wielded made me flinch in fear.I swallowed hard as I was now in proximity to his ghoulish boots.This was the end.In a swift he lifted up my bed but stopped midway as a fizzling noise nicked his attention.A noise I suspected to be from the kitchen,the same fizzling noise the electric kettle made whenever it's content was at it's boiling point.

He dropped the bed and wobbled out of my room taking a quick glance at my bed before leaving.Even after he had left I still felt his spooky eyes staring at my bed.

After making sure he was gone,I got out of my hiding, my body feeling flabby like I'd  shrink and fall at any moment.I reached out for my drawer where I took out my phone,shaking as I fumbled with the keypads.I dialed the only number I knew could  save me,911.

The calm and savory voice of the female respondent reminded me that I was still on earth and not a fugitive in hell.It lit a little candle of hope in me which was short-lived as the ferocious impact of what I perceived to be an hockey stick knocked me to the ground. My assailant had returned unnoticed.

I watched in stillness as blood trickled down my head forming a crimson blur on the linoleum floor. The Muzzy voice of the female respondent filtered through my ears as my mind succumbed to nothingness.
